Training a dog from the time that they are puppies is ideal, but you can train older dogs as well. Stopping bad or negative behaviors is possible, even if you are not a professional dog trainer or dog whisperer. Your dog has an innate need to please you and you can use that need to elicit the behaviors that you want from him. One important thing to realize is that your dog must see you as the leader, or the alpha. As long as that is the case you can get your dog to do almost anything that you want – within reason, of course!
Because bad behaviors are often learned, they can also be unlearned. In order to get your dog to stop jumping on people the minute they walk in the door you need to be aware of why they are engaging in such behavior. It could be some form of separation anxiety and is reinforced because the jumping results in attention, even if it is negative. Fortunately, there are ways to stop this annoying behavior, even if your dog has done it for years.
The best way to get your dog to produce the type of behavior that you want is to work with him repetitively. Providing positive reinforcement every time you get the result that you want and making sure your dog knows that you are the boss will be sure to garner the dog's best behavior, time and again. You can get your dog to stop jumping on people without spending an arm and a leg to do so.
