How to Observe Wildlife without Leaving Home

While lumbering herds of elephants and stalking Bengal tigers capture the imagination of most animal lovers, we often neglect the nature closest to us. Sometimes we need a reminder that we are part of a habitat, and that the miracle of life exists under our very noses. Educator and naturalist Carolyn Duckworth has said, "If you want to understand and become connected to your environment, keeping a field journal is one of the fastest ways to accomplish this goal."

Studies have found that children today consider nature to be somewhere else-on TV, videos, in the National Geographic only. But in reality, a genuine connection to wildlife around the globe is only an extension of a connection to the earth right where you stand. Good naturalists don't gain their knowledge from formal schooling, they get it in the field, by direct observation. And this observation can start right in your backyard or at the park down the street.

This article will offer pointers for keeping a nature journal. It draws heavily on the program laid out in the book Keeping a Nature Journal: Discover a Whole New Way of Seeing the World Around You by Clare Walker Leslie and Charles E. Roth.

The tools needed to start nature journaling are simple and inexpensive. One needs a notebook and something to write with. Experimentation will reveal your personal preferences for lined or clear paper, binding type, size, and lead or ink. As you gain experience you may add a small set of watercolor paints or colored pencils. If you use pencils you may need a sharpener, or you can use mechanical pencils, which yield more technical-looking drawings. You may also use a collecting bag for objects that you want to draw and study indoors. (Although you should collect only fallen objects, where permission is given).

There are no hard and fast rules for nature journaling, although entering observations using a heading is good practice. For your heading you may include your name, the date and time (it doesn't have to be an accurate clock time), the place, weather conditions, your first impressions, wind direction (use a compass for this), and cloud patterns and cloud cover.

To get started you may find this sequence of observations helpful, as it gets you in the habit of observing all around you:

Start by looking at the ground. Get a close up view of individual objects. Try to draw one or more in your journal, labeling each item. Take no more than five minutes per object, and give size measurements (you don't need a ruler, just estimate.) For further learning, try writing at least one question about each object. Now stand up and draw what comes into view at eye level. Label the object and describe what it's doing, or what it is part of. Look up from where you are standing. Record what you see above, and how it makes you feel.

Nature journals are not just for artists. Don't worry if your renderings look like scribbles. The point is that you are connecting to your environment.

Some questions you may use to direct your journaling, and deepen your connection to the life around you are:

What are the trees in my neighborhood? When do they bloom? What do their fruits and seeds look like? What insects use the trees? When do they shed their leaves? How do their seeds get to new sites to grow? What birds live in my neighborhood? What is their activity at various times of the day? How do different species of birds interact with each other? What kinds of insects gather around the light at my doorway each night throughout the year? When and where do mushroom species appear in my neighborhood?

Using questions like these you may find yourself discovering both the landscape you live on, and the landscape that lives in you. Those who keep a journal know that journaling is a form of journeying, and a well-kept journal can become a treasured record of where we have been, what we have seen, and what we have felt as we've interacted with the world.

You don't have to visit the glaciers of Alaska, or India's jungles, or the savannahs in Africa to connect to Mother Earth, although who of us wouldn't jump at the chance? Start by putting roots down right where you stand.

The Chinese consider pandas a national treasure because pandas roamed the earth several millions of years ago, and few species from that time survive till this day. That is why people call it a living fossil. No wonder the World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) chooses panda as its symbol.

A dog can be forced to do certain things, but if forced he generally acts so slow and sulky that it detracts from his performance, whereas, if he is coaxed into doing them and performs because he likes to, he will go through with his act with an enthusiasm and spontaneous that is most attractive and fun loving.

For these reasons you must not get overly excited while training your young dog nor speak loud, nor cuff and whip him, but should by frequent good-natured repetition of the same performance persuade and coax him to assume certain attitudes or do certain things, and when he has done so, praise him; he will then know that you appreciate what he has done. It is also most desirable to reward him with plentiful of praise and treats.

If it's a girl, there will be a tiny slit just under the anus, almost between her back legs.

DON'T MAKE PEOPLE JUDGE YOUR DOG

Names are very emotive. If people hear you call your dog Ripper or Fang, they immediately make a subconscious judgment on the dog's personality. Your dog may be the softest, daftest creature ever - but people will still be wary. The dog's true character can help you to choose an appropriate name. It's worth just watching your dog for a few days and see what sort of character it is. Once you get to know your dog a bit better, names might choose themselves!

BE CONSISTENT

Once you have chosen a name, don't change it. It's part of training your dog. When you call your dog, you want it to come to you. If you keep changing the name, the dog won't make the association and won't know what's going on!

Dogs can easily hear the 'hard' consonants, like D, K and T. Combine this with a short name of one syllable (two at the most) and it will make it much easier for you to train your dog. Try to avoid choosing a name that might confuse your dog. This could be one that sounds like a command (i.e. sit, fetch, come etc) or it could be a name that sounds similar to the name of a member of your family.

Preventing Animal Abuse by Teaching Children to Care for Pets

It’s sad to say that animal abuse is a growing problem in the United States. One recent article said that in the economic downturn, more and more pets were being abandoned, and other statistics show that in times of economic stress, abuse of all kinds-pets, children, spouses, and elders-increases measurably. Rather like small children, pets thrive on affection, structure, and positive interaction, yet in too many circumstances, this isn’t what they’re getting at all.

When our kids get their hands on a puppy or a kitten, when the whining and begging starts ("pleeeease? I’ll take care of it, I’ll feed it and walk it, you won’t have to do anything"), we do, of course, have to consider whether our family has the time and resources to give this small pet its best chance at a good, rewarding life. But before you groan at the prospect of vet bills and chewed-up slippers, think of all the things that our children can learn from taking care of pets. Being patiently taught how to care for a pet can foster the kind of empathy and responsibility in a child that can prevent animal abuse from happening in the future.

Tell your children about animal abuse. Children have deeply good hearts; they will be appalled to hear how some people treat animals. Remind them that some people get bored with their pets and neglect them, or that they get angry and hurt them. Tell them that those actions are not acceptable, and that if you bring a pet into your home, it will not be treated like that—even when its caretakers get bored or angry.

Remind your children that baby animals grow up. A cute, cuddly puppy or kitten will be a full-grown dog or cat in about a year. It will still be lovable and affectionate, but it won’t be tiny, and it won’t be as cute as it was when you couldn’t resist it. A commitment to a pet is a commitment for the pet’s entire life, not only when they’re small and cute, but also when they’re older. Getting tired of an older dog or cat is no excuse to neglect or mistreat it.

Make it clear that the less pleasant duties will be shared by all. Yes, this means housebreaking duties. Small kittens still need to learn about the litter box, and puppies are notoriously prone to accidents. If a child isn’t willing to do the icky stuff like clean the litter box and pick up the accidents, they are not doing their duty by their pet. Remind them that they wore diapers when they were little, but animals don’t get to do that.

Show them how their feelings are like the pet’s feelings. Even small children can understand the connections between their experience and their pet’s experience. How would your children feel if you simply “forgot” to make dinner one evening? Or if you kicked them out of the way instead of asking them politely to move? Or if you never had time to cuddle or play with them? The idea that their caregiver, the one who is supposed to love them best, would do any of those things is unthinkable, but they can grasp that they are the caregivers and love-givers to their pet, and should no more do those things to an animal than a parent would do them to a child.

Taking advantage of these simple teaching opportunities can develop empathy, kindness, and responsibility in children. The more children who develop these important qualities, the better chance we have of eradicating animal abuse for all generations.

Since the past couple of weeks a wave of news cubs, have been welcomed at el Zoológico de Vallarta. A range of animals like Pumas, Jaguars, Leopards have come into their little kingdom. In total 2 African Leopards, 3 Americans Pumas, 2 Black Panthers (Melanistic Jaguars, one male and one female,) a White-headed Capuchin Monkey, 3 Common Jaguars, 5 African Dwarf Goats, and a few Guinea Pigs have been born. This is not the end folks! The Zoo of Puerto Vallarta is awaiting the arrivals of a Striped Hyena, a Canadian Wolf, a white Bengal Tiger, three Spider Monkeys, a Black Jaguar and an orange Bengal Tiger, over the coming weeks. Isn’t that exciting? It is a sight worth watching!

The family who owns the Zoo, the Castañeda family, is deeply concerned about these animals and continuously strives for their preservation. They also believe that it is the utmost care and affection that they provide to the animals that in turn helps them to reproduce even in their confinement.

Speaking of animals, the Red Bone Team of PVYAFCA recently went to El Morro to fish for Tuna. This team even caught two large sized Tuna of about the 60 lb. during their 6 hour long Charter. The Bay of Banderas is home for the small Jacks, Bonitos and Dorados. Even big sized Sail Fish have been spotted in these regions. Big sized Rooster fish are also being brought in by Punta Mita.

The great fishing season has begun and the “Toroaba” boat has brought good hearty catches of Tuna, Dorado and even some Sail Fish. What was most exciting about this was that they even managed to get hold of some Black and Blue Marlin which was at the La Corbeteña.

At the El Banco, fish like Blue and Black Marlin, in addition to Tuna, Dorado and Sail Fish have been spotted. The season of fishing has very well taken off and will hopefully continue till the month of December. With the way the fish have been flowing in, a number of locals and tourists of Puerto Vallarta have begun their fishing escapades. It is fun and exciting and an activity that you can do with your entire family.

News agencies started reporting on a disturbing phenomenon in the bee population, in the spring of 2007.
