Not too long ago, the rich and fashionably elite money makers were flashing their cute little teacup Chihuahuas and dressed up canines. The smaller the better. The more fashionable these little dogs were, well that was even better yet.

Before we knew it everywhere you would look you would see a flock of Chihuahuas and designer dogs under the arm of almost every pet crazed teen and trendy 'wannabe' out there. Retailers were even selling gemstone flocked attire and pet purses that matched the pampered canines.

I remember to my surprise when I was vacationing in Florida, I stopped at a small pet boutique to do some browsing and a woman reached in her purse and pulled out a mini- dog! It easily fit in the palm of one hand! The poor little dog just sat their shaking as the owner drooled and made over it like a baby. Whatever!

Well it seems as if Designer Dogs are yesterday's news, designer cats are the next 'Chic'. Designer Cats are seemingly becoming the latest trend in the Hybrid Pet Craze, but at what cost?

Breeders are taking the plain old domestic cat and cross breeding the animal with an Asian Leopard or even a Jungle cat! These are the Hybrids that are going for a very hefty price tag anywhere from a few hundred dollars to around $20,000.00.

It has become more of a style statement than anything else. These Hybrid Kitties are being bred just for the mere fact the breeders know they can make some serious money with these pets. They don't tend to take into consideration what damage they are doing to either breed of the cat. Cross breeding is not a good idea as it destroys the bloodline and DNA of pure bred cats, this also results in medical ailments which can in turn rack up some seriously high Vet bills.

This isn't stopping the elite and wealthy from going out and purchasing these felines to add to their own family tree. For those whom money is not an object, they rarely think about what conditions these animals initially came from. The problem is many of these pets are bred day in and day out and their bodies are not able to recover fully to regain proper strength and stamina. Many cats at these breeders are not receiving medical care and are not up to date on their shots, putting them and others at risk of getting very sick. Most breeders only care about putting money in their own pocket and not focusing on the care of the cats.

Because most of these animals are not registered, a question could be raised as to how the pets are being treated during the breeding and pregnancy stage. If a so called 'Back Room Breeder' is just in it for the buck, some of these animals may be in danger or at an increased risk for developing health problems, especially during their pregnancy and delivery stages.

The Hybrid cat scene has remained quite controversial due to the fact that they are selling for such a high price. Some breeders are trying to cash in on mixing pure bred felines with mix bred felines and selling the animal for much less than an exotic cat. What most owners don't know is the past health problems of the breed and also what problems could arise due to the breeding of two different types of felines.

With designer kittens that resemble small snow leopards or mini black jaguars, the look appeals to all ages and serves as distinct gifts that some people may chose to give to the debutante or super spoiled brat who already has it all. These cats are merely being bred and sold to show off.

Truly it is hard to believe that most of these designer kitties will be loved and cared for as much as a farm cat or stray from the local humane society. Not to mention there are thousands of felines out there at the moment who need homes and also need to be spayed and neutered with adequate medical attention.

None the less, as with designer dogs, designer cats are the newest up and coming trend in the lifestyles of the wannabe chic and fabulous. Before we know it Paris and Brit will be toting around a darling little tigress instead of their yappy little pooches. Hopefully they realize they will need to leave the cat fights at home, not for the paparazzi. Wait, that will never happen.

The Critically Endangered Leatherback Sea Turtle: Most Amazing Animal On Earth?

The leatherback sea turtle is like the other remaining species of marine turtles, Once upon a time, it lived on land and had four legs but about 110 million years ago it developed massive flippers and populated the Seven Seas---before there were Seven Seas.

Probably, you, and most of your friends, have never given a moment's thought to . . . the leatherback sea turtle. And, though you may not even have known it exists the leatherback probably is the most amazing animal on earth. Sounds nuts but it is true.

Here's the tale.

It begins some a hundred ten million years ago. . . when the world was a very different place.

Although humans look around at the world and think that the big mountains and long rivers we see today have always been there, nothing could be farther from the truth.

For example, today's mighty Himalayan Mountains were not mighty when turtles first entered the oceans. Indeed, the Himalayas were still 65,000,000 years away from even existing.

Antarctica was joined to Australia when the earliest leatherbacks took to the sea and would not uncouple from it for about 30 million more generations of these sea animals.

South America was not far from West Antarctica. Another 80,000,000 years would go by before Antarctica would turn into the frigid continent of today.

The South Atlantic Ocean was still forming. In fact, not only were there no Seven Seas way back then, there were not seven continents, either, only two supercontinents.

This ancient time spawned these ancient marine turtles.

When the ancestors of today's leatherbacks turned to the ocean, there were no birds in the sky, no elephants, mastodons, mammoths, and not even a tiny mouse because there were no birds or mammals at all on earth.

The awesome Tyrannosaurus Rex would not terrorize the planet for about four hundred thousand centuries more. Yes, that is right: 400,000 centuries.

Your biology teacher may have told you that dolphins and whales originated from land animals and went to sea long ago. That is really impressive! Except to a sea turtle. Why? Because leatherbacks had been swimming the world's oceans for more than fifty million years before those mighty creatures---which are closely related to hippopotamus---evolved, left the land, and entered the oceans, too.

These are the largest of all sea turtles and can weigh nearly a ton, They were here way before the first dinosaur, survived the greatest mass extinction the world has ever experienced, and flourished. But, it is not their species longevity---amazing as that is---that warrants the title of most amazing animal on earth.

Consider this: we all marveled , and properly so, at Michael Phelps' 200 meter freestyle world record time. But, in the time it took him to go that distance, a huge leatherback, weighing about as much as the entire offensive line of a professional football team, would swim to thousand meter mark---more than a third of a mile ahead of Michael.

In fact, this magnificent relic is listed in the 1992 Guinness Book of World Records as the fastest reptile on earth!

It might be fairer to our race if the world's fastest sprinter competed against a swimming leatherback. At 100 meters, the race would be very close and maybe won by a nose---by the human. At 400 meters, it'd be a blow-out---for the turtle.

Not only does this ancient being swim five times faster than the fastest human on earth, it may also be the world's greatest long-distance migrating creature. One of these giants was monitored migrating 13,000 miles---and that was only to the destination from which it needed to return.

In addition to its incredible speed and stamina, it is the deepest diving marine turtle on the planet, regularly diving nearly 4,000 feet deep into the ocean. To put that depth into perspective, today's nuclear attack submarines are allowed to dive to a maximum normal operating depth of about 1,600 feet because they'd crush under the sea pressure at about 2,400 feet. The world's most modern technology and strongest metal and composite materials are no match for the diving ability of this ancient reptile.

There is also the incredible fact that leatherbacks are found not only in all tropical and subtropical waters on earth but have been seen as far north as the Arctic Circle, in Alaska, near Quebec, and Norway, and as far south as the Cape of Good Hope and even below New Zealand, in waters as cold as 40°F. Yet, although they are cold blooded reptiles, they remain toasty warm because they can maintain a body temperature as much as 32°F (18°C) higher than the surrounding water.

Disgracefully, in just three decades, man's rapacious greed and carelessness have decimated the numbers of this magnificent creature. Between 1980 and 2005, the number of leatherback sea turtles in Mexico declined 99% , a catastrophic decline since that country had about two thirds of the world's total leatherbacks.

Mexico should not be singled out because, all across the globe, leatherback populations collapsed. For example, just a few years ago Malaysia had the world's largest population of leatherbacks nests: 10,000. In 2008, there were two.

Today, more than a hundred countries, hundreds of conservation organizations, and tens of thousands of volunteers have marshaled forces to stem the decline of this magnificent creature but it remains very vulnerable.

Despite laws to the contrary their nests are routinely plundered for eggs.

Untold numbers die from eating plastic bags which they confuse with jellyfish, their primary food.

More drown in commercial fishing and shrimp nets which we euphemistically call "incidental catch."

We destroy their habitat, build our homes on their beaches and wonder why the sea turtles are going extinct.

This most ancient of all creatures has survived more than a hundred million generations but might not survive two more generations of mankind.

Somewhere, in the Heavens, Angels are weeping.

The Shetland Sheepdog Is Different From A Miniature Collie!

Shetland Sheepdogs or "Shelties" share a lot of aesthetic traits with the collie and are often called the Miniature Collie. The reality is that the breeds, despite a few similar bloodlines, are very, very different! Collies and Shelties were developed in different regions (though both in Scotland), and despite the fact that both breeds are intended for herding, each was bred with completely separate strengths and weaknesses.

The Shetland Sheepdog is named for its region of origin, the Shetland Islands. The breed was developed in the early 19th century and recognized by the AKC in 1911, whereas Collies, also a Scottish breed, are documented as far back as the 1600s. Both breeds were used as herding dogs and are classified in the AKC Herding Group, but their jobs were slightly different. The Collie was intended to herd and protect sheep, while the Shetland Sheepdog's primary task was to keep the sheep away from crops that they could potentially trample, eat, and destroy.

The most obvious difference between the Collie and the Sheltie is their size. Shelties stand only 13 to 16 inches at the shoulder, while Collies tower over them at a shoulder height of 22 to 26 inches. Collies also weigh in at a minimum of 50 pounds, twice the maximum weight of a Shetland Sheepdog by AKC standards!

The Shetland Sheepdog earned its Miniature Collie nickname primarily because of their coat's similarity to that of the rough-coated Collie. The smooth-coated Collie has a different appearance altogether, with a far shorter, silkier coat. The Shetland Sheepdog's beautiful coat is due in no small part to the coat of the rough-coated Collie, as Collie bloodlines were used in the development of the Shetland Sheepdog.

The biggest difference between Collies and Shelties, besides their size of course, is in their personalities. They are both intelligent, hard-working breeds with significant herding skills and instincts, but the similarities end there. The Collie is a gentle, refined breed that carries itself eloquently. They are not loud dogs, rarely barking unless they are working or commanded to. They are unconcerned with strangers, but are still loving and affectionate with their owners and families. On the other side of the coin is the Shetland Sheepdog, which can be a bit if a goofball. Shelties love to run and play with anyone that will have them and are said to have a sense of humor.

Many people unfamiliar with the breed differences choose Shetland Sheepdogs for their pet because they feel a Collie is too large of a breed for city life. The irony in this decision is that Collies are much more docile and would likely be more content to relax with their owners and go for long walks, as opposed to the Sheltie who would probably like to run laps, catch frisbees and play all day!

Both breeds make fantastic dogs for families or single owners alike. They are both loving and good with children, and despite their varying activity levels, are both adaptable to any type of loving environment that suits their basic needs.

Should You Collect Extra Rent and Extra Security Deposit for Pets?

The collection of extra rent and extra security deposit is often an area of opposing thoughts between landlord and tenant. Therefore, let’s look at the problem from both perspectives, beginning with the tenant.

The Tenant
Many tenants think it is unfair to charge both extra security deposit and extra rent for the privilege of pet ownership and I will tell you why: If someone wants the pleasure of a pet (especially a dog or cat) an extra security deposit is nothing to pay for that pleasure. Most tenants understand that and know the extra security deposit is taken in case the pet somehow damages the rental unit. If they do damage something, the landlord pays for the damages out of that money.

Now when a landlord charges extra rent for a pet, are they charging it because the pet will be taking up more living space, use more hot water, or flush the toilet? No. They are charging extra rent because the pet could possibly cause damage to the property.

Therefore, when a landlord charges extra security deposit for wear and tear or possible damage and extra rent for those same reasons, many people believe they are being double-charged for the pleasure of owning a pet. And nobody likes to be double-charged.

The Landlord
On the other hand, from a landlord’s perspective, charging the extra rent for the privilege of pet ownership is smart business since the risk of damage is definitely higher, and the tenant should compensate for that risk. Let’s say you feel $25 a month is enough for compensation, so you add that to the rent. This additional $300 per year somewhat eases your mind should the pet cause damages to the premises.

Let’s say six months into the lease the tenant moves out. Upon their departure you discover Fido had a weak bladder and consequently ruined all the living room carpet. The $150 you collected in extra rent ($25 per month times 6 months) will not cover that replacement and because you didn’t receive any extra security money up front you lose.

The basic thought to keep in mind from a landlord’s perspective is a pet who has a bad day can do hundreds of dollars of damage to a property during that one day and collecting $25 or even $50 per month to cover that bad day just is not enough insurance—especially if this damage happens early in the tenancy. For this reason, it makes perfect sense from a landlord’s perspective to charge both extra rent and extra security deposit for a pet.

Therefore, although tenants may believe you are double-charging them, in reality, the combination extra rent and extra security deposit is really an attempt to cover all scenarios—and rightfully so. Ultimately, it is easier financially on the tenant because most tenants will not have the extra money for a much larger security deposit, such as a full month’s rent. Although this combination leaves you with a little more risk in the beginning of their tenancy, this risk is reduced with each passing month.

The one advantage about collecting extra rent is if upon departure, the tenant’s pet really did very little damage, then you’ve made more money on that rental since the extra rent is yours to keep no matter what.

The Answer
There probably isn’t a good universal answer to this question although there is one universal element. That element is this: if you allow pets, especially dogs and cats, in your rental, then you need to collect some form of compensation in case they cause any damage. This can be in the form of extra rent, extra security deposit, or both. Whatever you choose, provide yourself with as much coverage as possible. Animal Evolution

Like all living things animals undergo changes as each new generation succeeds the one that existed before. These changes are usually so small that they are difficult to see but over millions of years they can completely alter the way that animals look and behave. This process of change is called evolution and it allows animals to take advantage of new opportunities and to adapt to changes that take place in the world around them. Evolution works by changing the existing characteristics usually by a series of very small mutations. The result of these changes is that every animal is a living form of evolutionary history, which shows how different species are related to each other.

Evolution is made possible by the variations that exist with animals. It exists because animals compete with each other for the limited amount of resources that are available, space and food. Those animals with the more useful characteristics and features will survive whereas the weaker animals will find it difficult to exist. This 'weeding out' process is called selection and natural selection operates on a continuous basis. An example of this is camouflage which is a valuable aid to an animal's survival. Natural selection will ensure that any improvements that are made to an animal's camouflage are passed onto the next generation, increasing its chances of survival and also its chances of producing its young.

Adaptations such as camouflage will only last as long as they are useful. If an animal's lifestyle changes, the path of evolution will also change. This has happened with birds; some lineages have evolved the power of flight but have lost this when they have taken up life on land.

A species is any group of animals that has the ability to interbreed and under normal circumstances does not breed with another species. Speciation is the evolutionary process that brings about new animals. It usually occurs when an exiting species become spilt up into two or more isolated groups, which are kept apart either by physical barriers such as mountains and seas, or by changes in behaviour. If these groups remain separate for enough time, they manage to evolve their own characteristic adaptations and become so different that they no longer interbreed.

Speciation is hard to observe because it occurs at a very slow pace but evidence of it is easy to find. Most animals show distinct regional differences and in time these local subspecies are able to become species in their own right.

Extinction is a natural form of evolution becomes for some species to succeed, other species must fail. Since life began 99 per cent of the earth;s species have disappeared and on at least five occasions large numbers have died out in a very short space of time. The most recent of these mass extinctions was 65 million years ago when dinosaurs and other species died. However, despite such catastrophes the total number of living species has until recently, followed a generally upward trend. Today the extinction rate is increasing rapidly because of human interference in the ecosystem. Primates, tropical birds and amphibians are particularly threatened and this is likely to continue; evolution generates new species at a much slower rate than the current rate of extinction.

Unrelated animals often develop very noticeable similarities. An example of this is dolphins and sharks who are fundamentally very different but both have streamlined bodies with an upright dorsal fin, giving them speed and stability underwater. Amphisbaenians and caecilians also look very similar bur the former are reptiles and the latter are amphibians. These similarities are a result of convergent evolution, a process in which natural selection comes up with the same set of adaptations to a particular way of life. It does this by reshaping body parts or whole animals until outwardly they look the same. Convergence is responsible for a whole series of similarities in the animal kingdom. It can make the task of tracing evolution difficult which is a main reason why the details of animal classification often change.

Over millions of years animals have managed to evolve complex partnerships with each other and also with other forms of life. In one common form of partnership, called mutation or symbiosis, both species are able to benefit from this arrangement. Examples are oxpeckers and larger mammals and corals and microscopic algae. A lot of these partnerships are loose ones but some are so highly evolved that the two partners are unable to survive without each other. Partnerships may appear to be mutually beneficial but each partner is driven by self interest. If one partner is able to change the balance in its favour, natural selection will lead it to do so. The ultimate outcome of all this is parasitism, where one animal, the parasite, lives in or outside another, entirely at the hosts expense.

The present day distribution of animals is the result of many differing factors. The continental drift and volcanic activity constantly reshapes the surface of the earth. These geological activities have split up animal groups and created new habitats. One of the most important effects of this is in Australia and Madagascar which have been isolated from the rest of the world for millions of years. Here a whole range of indigenous species live, such as kangaroos and lemurs that are found nowhere else outside their native homes.

Animals are separated when continents drift apart and they are brought together when they collide. The distribution of animals is evidence of such events long after they occur. For example Australasia and Southeast Asia became close neighbours a long time ago but their wildlife remains entirely different. It is divided by "Wallaces Line", an invisible boundary that shows where the continents came together.

Lake Manyara National park

The variety of habitats parallels its exceptional scenery.

Every imaginable East African animal is found here in abundance. There are great herds of buffalo, zebra, wildebeest and several varieties of gazelle. Mahogany, sausage tree and croton are alive with blue monkeys and vervet monkeys. Some of the most amazingly large pods of hippos congregate at the rivers emerging into the lake, and the birdlife is plentiful. Lake Manyara is also known for its “treeclimbing” lions.

Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park covers 3237 square kilometers and lies within the Mkata River plain bordered by the Uluguru Mountain range to the east and the Rubeho Mountains on the west, an area of lush vegetation which particularly attracts elephants and buffalos. Open grasslands dominate in the flood plain, eventually merging with the Miombo woodland covering the lower hills. Wildlife is abundant with giraffes, zebras, buffalos, hartebeests, wildebeests, elephants, wild dogs, and smaller mammals and reptiles. Mikumi’s vegetation includes woodland, swamp and grassland with two water holes, Mkata and Chamgore. Apart form the saddle-bill stork, hammer kop and malachite kingfisher, there are also monitor lizards and a deadly python inhabiting the pools.

Ngorongoro Conservation Area

Ngorongoro is quite unique as its physical protection from man natural beauty ranks it among the most pristine wildernesses on earth. It is regarded as a natural wonder of the world and has been declared a World Heritage Site. It is the largest intact crater in the world, being 610 meters deep, 16 kilometers across and covering an area of 540 square kilometers. On the crater floor, grassland blends into swamps, lakes, rivers, woodland and mountains – all a haven for wildlife, including the greatest predator population in Africa. The volcanic crater is packed with wildlife, including all the big game. Its pride and joy, however, is that it remains the last great wild refuge for the endangered black rhino.

Ruaha National Park

The Ruaha National Park is Tanzania’s second largest park and the world’s largest elephant sanctuary. Although set in spectacular scenery with an abundance of wildlife, the park is one of the lesser visited in the country, keeping it an isolated and peaceful wilderness. Amongst the game found at the park are elephants, buffalos, giraffes, cheetahs, lions, leopards, a wide variety of antelope and over 465 recorded species of birdlife.

Selous National Reserve

Selous is one of the most remote and least visited game park in Africa, but at 15,000 square miles, it is the world’s largest game reserve. The name derives from hunter-explorer Frederick Courtenay Selous, a keen naturalist and conservationist as well as a hunter. He was killed in the First World War in the Beho Beho region of the reserve. The defining feature of the Selous is the great Rufiji River, which naturally splits the ecosystem into two distinct parts.

Selous National reserve can be explored by boat, sailing through swamps and lagoons where elephant often come to bathe, or even by foot, as the Selous is one of few Tanzanian reserves to allow walking tours. It has the world’s largest number of big game, more than 120,000 elephants, 160,000 buffaloes and about 2,000 rhinoceros. In addition, the Selous contains Africa’s greatest concentration of hippopotamus, crocodiles and wild dogs.

The Serengeti National park

The name 'Serengeti' comes from the Maasai language and appropriately means an 'endless plains'. Flynn's son, John, owns the John Flynn Funeral Home in Hermitage, Pa., and the pair also operate the Hillcrest-Flynn Pet Funeral Home and Crematory.

"For family members, I would say Derek is like an oasis amid a sea of grief," Tom Flynn said. "He will change all those bad feelings."

Flynn explained that about seven years ago, he decided to get a dog. A friend of his, who was a volunteer for Canine Companions for Independence, suggested Flynn look into the organization. About 90 percent of the dogs trained by Canine Companions for Independence go to disabled people, and the remaining 10 percent end up at facilities - generally hospitals or schools.

"Derek was the first service dog placed in a funeral home in the United States," said Flynn, who had to spend two weeks with Derek at the facility before bringing him home. "They really match the dog to the person, not the other way around," Flynn explained. He added that when he went to the facility several years ago, there were eight people and 11 dogs.

Miraculously, at the end of the two weeks, each person got the dog they wanted. "The bonds were just so strong from the training," Flynn said. "Derek was my first choice but not the first choice with the other seven people."

Derek on Duty

Typically, when a family walks into the Flynn funeral home, a staff member will ask them if they would like to have Derek present. "More and more over the years, people have opted to have him there," Flynn said. "They see the dog and invariably they smile, and then I approach them. Derek is very gentle. Sometimes I will even drop his leash, and he'll pick it up, put it in his mouth and walk over to them."

One of the great things about Derek is that he instinctively knows who needs him the most. He'll usually go first to the children, then to women and then to men. "When we do grief therapy, he'll basically go in a circle and visit everyone, and if someone starts crying, he will break off and go to that person," Flynn said.

The golden retriever has attended hundreds of funerals, and the business has never gotten a complaint. Of course, a family can decide that they don't want Derek at the services.

"We do it on a case-by-case basis," Flynn explained. "Sometimes, the surviving spouse asks Derek to be with them, and they will stand at the casket with Derek with them and greet people who come to the visitation."

Derek also does his share of good deeds outside the funeral home. Flynn donates his dog's services to Sharon Regional Health System. At the hospital, if staff members are trying to get a child to walk again, they will often have Derek stand 10 feet away and then ask the child, "Why don't you go see the dog." Flynn said, "All of a sudden, there the child will be, standing next to Derek."

Flynn and Derek are inseparable and pretty much go everywhere together. They even traveled to New York City after Sept. 11, 2001, to work with a Long Island hospital that was helping children. "The director said that Derek was the most positive influence on the children of anything that they were doing at that facility," Flynn said proudly.

Other Funeral Homes Recognize Value of Pets

James M. Olson, owner of Lippert-Olson Funeral Home in Sheboygan, Wis., and a spokesperson with the National Funeral Directors Association, also knows the value of pets in helping people dealing with grief.

"As a funeral director and dog owner myself, I can understand the unconditional, without question and nonjudgmental love that comes from a pet," he said. "This can be extremely beneficial to the families who are experiencing a loss. Whether it is with small children who just want someone to hug or adults who just need someone to sit by silently and be there for them, pets can fill an empty place in the heart to help one
along during the grieving process."

Olson, who lives above his funeral home, has a German shepherd named Lobo who assists him in serving families. "Many times he greets people from upstairs, and I am asked to bring him in to meet a family," he said. "Animals have a way of naturally putting people at ease, which opens up a dialogue where the family feels comfortable with you and the environment they are in."

As far as Flynn is concerned, every funeral home should look into having a dog on staff to comfort grieving families. "Anyone who deals with grief or works with patients on a long-term basis should think about getting a dog," he said. "They are wonderful."

Goats: Daily Care of Growing Pygmy Goats

As time goes on, I'm developing a more defined daily process. Below is what I've started doing and I think it's working.

Light- There is a light in the coop (powered by good old extension cord power) that can be turned on/off by the surge protector button. At the evening feed, I'll turn the light on so I can see to put them to bed later on. Just be careful leaving as the ground is uneven due to my not having completed the pathway.
Fan- It's going to be hot this week I think. It can get really hot in the coop on sunny days. So I use the brown hobble strap to fasten the fan onto the post (it's a tight fit but it does make it to the first hole) and place the fan on top of the gate-oscillating. This makes it a pain to get in/out of the stall but I feel like any air movement is better than none at all to take the edge off. They've been hanging out in the shade outside lately even with the fan on but I guess offering the options make me feel better.

Note: There are wood panels that I put up at night. Also, please lock the coop when you're not there. I just have this thing since I feel like the neighbors to the North of me seem to not understand boundaries. I feel better when the coop is locked if nobody is around. I realize my methods are total overkill but I still consider them babies and I think I'm more afraid of something getting them as opposed to them getting into trouble-since I think things are pretty baby proofed.

*Morning feed- fed by about 9am. They get emotional when it's later than 9:30.
*How much-3/4 Cup each (I've just made them all the same, it's easier and they're growing.)
*Evening feed- 6pm
*How much-3/4 Cup each

Where and in what order to dole out feed: I could be wrong but it seems as though they like the routine that is falling into place so here is how it's coming together: Facing the stall in counter-clockwise order (I know, a bit much!) First, place the square feed pan down below next to water for Clarence, this keeps him from beating up the others while waiting for his feed. Next is Tawanda up top on the feed spot facing the hay storage. Next is Carl on the feed spot to the left, up top where Tawanda is. The last one is Cracker and his spot is over next (to the left) to their enter/exit door to the goat yard, next to the hay holder.

If Carl goes for Tawanda's feed, I just tap him and get him over to his bucket. I think the amount I'm feeding gets them all finishing at about the same time. If one has finished, he'll go harass another but I've decided that I can't micromanage every aspect so they're on their own to sort it out. I think it's minimizing conflict- for the most part. It's up to you if you want to leave the feed buckets in the stall until the next feeding or not. I usually remove them when I go out a little later to check on them, that way they're ready for the next feeding and out of the way.

After they're all done and if they need hay, I toss in a flake of hay into the hanging feeder. If needed, I put some on top of bale of straw up top too. Not all really eat that hay so I make sure they have enough in the hay holder more than anywhere-it's the main hay eating place for all of them.

Water- They have to have fresh water every day. Also because junk ends up in the water so it gets gross. So I have a little green bucket I use to give them water in their stall every morning. I feed them first and while they're eating, I replace the water. I just toss it out door to the coop. I'll put the little green bucket inside first gate (next to the dog water). They can just get hose water. The oval water trough in the yard doesn't have to be freshened every day really. They don't mess that one and they do drink water older than 24hrs out of it. I just refresh it about every other day.

Letting the goats out/putting them up- They can be out all day and I would say my only concern about putting them up at night is if it's too early and the coop is too warm. They seem to be fine (or maybe it's me) having access to the goat yard when it's dark. So I'll put them up as late as 10 or as early as 8. There is a string I use to hold the window open so the goats can get in and get out. I just loop it around. When I close them in for the night I use the piece of wood slid down and resting on the string to stay in place. It's not the best design but it works for now I guess!

Restoration Efforts For The Mexican Grey Wolf In New Mexico

Once roaming proudly through the landscapes of New Mexico, Texas, Arizona and the country of Mexico, the Mexican gray wolf has sadly almost been wiped out of existence in the United States and Mexico. Fortunately, agencies in both countries have allocated part of their resources and initiated recovery and restoration efforts including New Mexico.

Wolves were abundant in the area until the early 20th century when humans started settling in great numbers in the area. Being natural predators, wolves threatened the livestock and other resources of these settlers as well as directly threatening the humans themselves. For 70 years, the human settlers devoted considerable amount of resources to exterminate the animals. The gray wolves were furiously hunted down and eliminated until only a few remained. As a result, the Mexican wolf was placed among the other endangered species listed under the Endangered Species Act. The act was passed in 1973, and three years later, the human attitude towards the gray wolf took a complete reversal. Humans specifically took on a gentler outlook towards the gray wolf and conspired to save the species from the brink of extinction, which they brought upon the animal themselves. Restoration of the gray wolves to New Mexico is now a priority.

Recovery Begins

Recovery and restoration efforts in New Mexico began in 1977 with the bi-national captive breeding program between the United States and Mexico. Under this program, Mexican gray wolves in Mexico were to be captured and bred to increase their population. These wolves would then be reintroduced to the wild after a few years. The program aimed to breed at least a hundred of these animals before restoration of the wolves to the wild. The restoration plan was given the green light by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service five years after the agreement was entered into by the US and Mexico. These countries now use their resources for restoring the wolves back where they belong.

While the wolves were being bred in captivity, the parties were also busy selecting a place ideal for restoration of the animals back into their natural habitats. A recommendation was made in 1996 suggesting two areas: the Apache and Gila national forests. The former was in the eastern Arizona area, while latter is in New Mexico's western regions. This recommendation was approved by the Secretary of the Interior in March 1997.

Behavioral Management Prior to Being Released

Since animals that have been bred in captivity have the tendency to become minimally domesticated, a system was put in place by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to make sure that the animals were able to adjust to their life in the wild after restoration to their natural habitats. These measures involved pre-release captive facilities and resources where they were made to adjust to their new life in the wild.

These facilities are designed to simulate the feel of being in the wild, so wolves can acclimate. Humans in New Mexico have minimal contact with the wolves. This is to train them not to get used to human contact and train them to avoid possible contact, to protect human resources and property.
